Sarvestan Project: Mixed Excavation Support for a 9-Story Tower The Sarvestan Project, on Sarvestan Street, involved excavation for a 9-story tower with one ground floor and two basement levels. The site sat in close proximity to neighboring yards and an existing building on three sides, and was bounded by a city street on the fourth; that proximity meant the stabilization system couldn't be a single uniform solution around the whole perimeter — each side needed its own approach. On the north side, where the gap to neighboring structures was tightest, cast-in-place piles were combined with soil nailing and a truss bracing system. The east side was braced with a truss system and a temporary earth berm. On the south and west sides, where more room existed behind the wall, a soldier-pile wall was used together with rows of multi-strand ground anchors. At the corners, strut bracing handled the combined load from both adjacent faces at once. The excavation face was covered on every side with steel mesh and shotcrete, with a drainage system installed behind it to prevent water pressure from building up. Every component — from the foundation columns and truss connections to the anchor-head and nail details — was sequenced against the actual excavation progress, so no face of the excavation was ever left unsupported. Ziggurat designed and executed the complete stabilization system for the Sarvestan Project. Using a different method on each side made it possible to excavate safely right up against neighboring buildings and a city street, without trading away safety or execution quality for any of those constraints.
