Iran Mall Expansion Deep Excavation The Iran Mall Expansion Deep Excavation is one of the largest and most technically demanding urban excavation support projects undertaken in Iran, and a benchmark project by international standards. The project involved more than 100 kilometres of borehole drilling and the construction of 45 reinforced concrete bored piles, each extending to a depth of 55 metres, within an excavation reaching 60 metres below ground level—all completed in less than seven months. Its complexity extended far beyond its scale. The excavation was bordered by an operational bridge and office building to the north, an access tunnel to the west, and a curved retaining wall requiring boreholes of up to 47 metres in length. These constraints demanded innovative engineering solutions, meticulous planning, and flawless execution throughout every stage of construction. This project became a significant milestone in advancing the design and construction of deep excavation support systems in Iran. Key technical achievements included achieving the design grout strength in less than 30 hours, successful installation of long boreholes and seven-strand ground anchors, comprehensive geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring, innovative grouting techniques, optimized grout mix design, the development of custom-built stressing jacks, and integrated project control through a dedicated Project Management Information System (PMIS). Today, the Iran Mall Expansion stands as a landmark example of innovation, technical excellence, and integrated project delivery in complex urban geotechnical engineering.
